Mark Dennis Lyons

July 23, 1961 ~ March 21, 2024 (age 62) 62 Years Old

Tribute

Mark Dennis Lyons passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2024. Mark was born on July 23, 1961, to Hugh and Patsy Lyons in Houston, Texas. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Tammy, daughter Laura, grandsons Mark Anthony and Major, sister Tonya and brother-in-law Doyle Roemer, sister-in-law Gina Lyons, Aunt Barbara Hough, nephew Chase Lyons and his children, Dayton, Brooklyn, and Brenna, niece Alicia Mendoza and husband Michael, nephew Brett Roemer, his wife Shelby and their two sons, Case and Colt, and many cousins. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, brother Anthony, and his aunts and uncles.

A lifelong lover of music, Mark was known to play his favorites loudly and often. His favorite bands were Lynyrd Skynyrd, Doobie Brothers, and Led Zeppelin. He loved fishing in Galveston, hunting all over Texas, watching (and stressing) about the Texans, and wrestling, which he shared with his daughter and grandsons.

Mark was gregarious, welcoming, witty, and a gifted and captivating storyteller. His sense of humor will be greatly missed. There were many weekend nights spent playing cards with family and many rounds of him conveniently “breaking even” when it came time to take score. He played Uno and Phase 10 with the objective of having some mischievous fun outweighing winning by just the tiniest bit.

Mark loved any reason to have a fish fry or BBQ. He participated in several different cook-offs throughout the years and their crew won awards for best ribs, chicken, and brisket. At parties, Mark could be found sitting next to the Bluetooth speaker playing DJ and maxing out the volume on his favorite songs. He’d stay up as late as everyone else, even though he had been up the earliest prepping and cooking. He played host with ease, making sure everyone was fed and having a great time.

Mark was mechanically gifted and could disassemble and fix just about anything with a motor, bringing multiple “lost causes” back to life with a bit of patience. He was the best kind of stubborn in this regard, if he couldn’t figure out how to fix it, it was broken. He dabbled in a multitude of hobbies throughout his life; pottery, macrame, building bicycles, being an assistant swim teacher with the American Red Cross, and gardening. Ten-foot-tall tomato plants were a normal occurrence in his backyard garden.

Those lucky enough to go fishing with Mark at the helm were let in on his fishing spots and often ended their day with their daily limit in the cooler with daylight to spare. During one of his many trips down to the jetties, Mark noticed that a boat was in trouble and sinking. He called the Coast Guard and got the men into his boat even though it would put his boat over the weight limit. He kept everyone safe until the Coast Guard could arrive and transfer the rescued men to their boat. For this, Mark was awarded a Life Saver Award from the American Red Cross.

The family invites those who knew and loved Mark to a celebration of his life to be held at Cypress-Fairbanks Funeral Home on April 5, 2024, at 10am, where stories can be shared, and memories cherished.

As we say goodbye to Mark, we hold tight to the echoes of his laughter, the wisdom he imparted, and the immense warmth he brought into our lives. He may have left us too soon, but his spirit will forever guide and inspire us.
